One-Way Ticket: Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series and Other Visions of the Great Movement North

Visits

Museum of Modern Art

60 captioned paintings, plain and simple clearly chronicle the movement of African Americans North to South. What a powerful reminder of the passion and clarity to be found in use of shape and color. I knew the artist, but not this work as a series. I had missed out. The 60 paintings circling a room, make the narrative clear, you travel time. The strongly colored graphic series is mated with music and writing infused with the same disappointments, frustration and pain, a capsule portrait of a stretch of time.

You feel, I felt.
